Slings Collections

If you are unfamiliar with fabric baby slings, the choice of different sling styles and makes can initially seem a little overwhelming. The descriptions that follow are intended to help you understand better how each sling works and the pros and cons of each one. If you still need some help in choosing the right sling, please feel free to contact me.

POUCHES

A POUCH is a tube of material worn over one shoulder like a "Miss World" sash. The fabric is folded double to create a secure pocket for the baby to lie or sit in.

RING-SLINGS

RING-SLINGS are long pieces of fabric with two rings sewn into one end. The fabric is looped through the rings, like a belt, and worn over one shoulder. Pulling the fabric through the rings adjusts the size of the pouch and makes ring slings the most versatile and speedily adjustable of all the slings.

WRAPS

WRAPS are simply very long pieces of fabric ( up to 5m) which are wrapped around the wearer's body and the baby in a large variety of tying styles. Usually worn over two shoulders, they are very supportive for older babies and can be used for front, back and hip carries.

PROS:

  • Suitable from newborn to approx 12 months.
  • Pouches are very quick to put on and simple to use.
  • Baby can be popped in and out in seconds.
  • Up to 5 different carrying positions.
  • The sleeker look can be more appealing to dads.
  • The cheapest option for those on a budget.

CONS:

  • It is essential to get the correct size and one pouch cannot be shared between different-sized care-givers.
  • They have less adjustability which can make it harder to get a really close hold or to loosen enough for breastfeeding.
  • Less comfortable for larger toddlers or for prolonged carriying.

PROS:

  • Suitable from newborn to approx 2 years old;
  • Once mastered, they are very quick to put on and baby can be popped in and out in seconds.
  • Multiple wearing positions (front, hip and back)
  • Independently adjustable hems allow for a nice high and tight hold.
  • Greater adjustability, and a wide tail for coverage, makes them perfect for breastfeeding.
  • A pocket in the tail is handy for carrying small items.
  • Can be used by different sized care-givers.

CONS:

  • It is important to learn how to adjust the sling correctly for maximum comfort and safety, and this can take a little bit of practice.
  • Worn on one shoulder only so can feel less comfortable with heavy toddlers, or for prolonged carrying.

PROS:

  • Suitable from newborn to two years or older.
  • Distribute the weight very evenly over both shoulders and so are very comfortable. Even heavy toddlers can be worn for prolonged periods. The best sling for back carries.
  • Good slings if you suffer from a weak back.
  • A large number of tying positions means everyone can find at least one tie that suits them.

CONS:

  • Not very quick to put on and some people find the lengths of fabric unmanageable.
  • Learning the different ties takes some practice.
  • Some people feel don't like the feeling of being wrapped in the fabric.

It is important to find the right sling for your own needs and abilities.
Questions that are good to ask yourself would be:

  1. Do I want a simple, no fuss sling with very little to learn? (pouch)
  2. Do I intend to breastfeed in it? (ring sling, pouch or wrap)
  3. Do I just want a sling for occasional use/to keep in the buggy/around the house/popping in and out of the car etc,? ( pouch or ring sling)
  4. Do I want a sling that will go all the way through from newborn to toddler? (wrap or ring sling)
  5. Will I be using the sling for prolonged carries like country walks etc? (wrap or ring sling)
  6. Do I want other people to be able use the sling? (wrap or ring sling)
  7. Which slings can I use with twins? (wrap or ring sling)

If you are still unsure which sling is right for you, try to find a local "sling meet" (www.slingmeet.co.uk) where you can try different styles and get advice from other babywearing parents. If you live in the Leamington Spa area, you are welcome to contact me for a sling trial.
